Greetings, I have either stumbled onto a small treasure or a defaced relic. PREFACE – I a fair amount about the semi-autos I own but next to nothing about old military bolt guns but there are a few I’d like to get. A Mauser is one of em. I stumbled onto this in a nearby pawnshop and I may be able to get it reasonably but I am concerned about a few things. This is DWM Berlin production straight bolt infantry version with the 29” barrel. I would say that after a little reading up and a second look at it that it is probably 100% correct as it has matching serial numbers everywhere I could find (including the cleaning rod!) The little Phrygian cap and other emblems are stamped on several places including the front sight.
The bolt/action/receiver is all very clean and the action seems not too tight but smooth.1) I read that many of these were rechambered for a 30-06 when brought into the US and while shootable are thus inaccurate as the original 7.65x53 is more of a.313 cal not.30 cal. Knowing how to identify whether this has been rechambered is concern #1.2) The stock, while in good to excellent condition is bone dry and smooth. It must have been sanded or stripped b/c you can see remnant cosmoline in some of the crevasses where metal meets wood. All stamps and markings are VERY clear. There’s a circled RA on the top of the stock and a shielded AB behind the trigger group and of course the matching serial number E87xx is everywhere.3) While the nickel plating of the receiver is spotless there is a bit of surface rust on the bolt handle, at the front site and, curiously, a bit of a finger print has left it’s mark on an area of bluing around the rear sight frame which brings me to concern #3. The barrel, front barrel band, around the front site and a few other pieces of metal look freshly blued. Were these rifles ever blued in original production?
Perhaps this could be original bluing in great condition? My gut tells me no.4) The bore seems to have a bit of superficial dust or debris scattered in it but is otherwise shiny with strong rifling. The muzzle had too much dust and dirt to really get a good look at its condition but I think there was strong rifling to the end.
The chamber breech area looked fantastic and when I reach my pinky into the chamber it comes out a little dirty and greasy with the tell tale scent of cosmoline NOT CLP or any gun oil.He was asking $450 but I could tell it’s been there a while and he’s ready for it to go away. Said he’d take $250.
Oh and his tag said 7.62x39 cal on it. He has no idea what this thing is and admits it.
Would NOT let me take pics of it. So whaddya think? Is this some sanded, rechambered and blued hack job or might I have found some really cherry condition Argy?
It might be worth the $250 (or less) to find out but I’m really concerned that it may have been rechambered 30-06. My best answers, your mileage may vary.1) A.30-06 round, or headspace gauge, would not chamber in the original chamber.
Even a spent 06 cartridge would tell you if the rifle has been altered, if you gently try to load it.2) The wood condition could be the result of harsh chemicals used to remove the cosmo. Lemon oil should help rejuvenate the stock.3) The receiver is not nickle plated, just left unblued from the factory. Bolt is also correct, in-the-white.Most other parts are supposed to be blued, and from the description of the receiver's condition, I wouldn't be surprised if the rifle is still original finish overall.$250 is a great price for an all matching '09, and I would snatch it up, especially if he will let you test the chamber. If it is the long rifle, it is probably not going to be rare. The cavalry carbines are not particularly scarce, either, though some would consider them very desirable and they are much rarer than the rifle. If the one you are looking at is in the original chambering, $250 would be a great price, but it would probably not ever command the dollar level of one with an intact crest The 1909 Argentine Mausers are generally not rare guns in any sense, though there are rare minor variants, but you probably will not find a better Mauser or many better bolt action rifles in terms of quality or shootability. Many, if not most collectors would jump on this rifle, if it is not re-chambered.
The cavalry carbines will have 'ears' around the front sight. If it passes the '06 test described, I'd pay the man and run away with it.
As you can see, the bands were blued. From what I've seen, most bands appear to have a temper or nitre blue finish.
If the stock cartouches are crisp and the corners around the action are sharp, I doubt it has been sanded. I have a E series long rifle and the stock is dry appearing. It also has a good bit of sanding marks from the factory. The receiver has about a 320 grit finish rather than a high polish.Manufacture dates and ser. Nos.(from another forum).
I've got a model 1909 Argentine rifle Deutche Waffen-und munitionsfabriken Berlin. Bolt action, bent bolt, and barrel in white. This was a replacement for the first rifle that I ever bought when I was a teenager back in 1967.
That first rifle was a short barreled cavalry model with a saddle loop on the stock and no bayonet lug which was stolen. This gun was a excellent shooter, but a bear to find cheap ammo for. Norma is way over the top on cost.
Surplus ammo for it proved unreliable so I made my own with a RCBS die set out of 30-06 brass. The 1909 replacement shot awfull and since most of my collection is.30 caliber I had this rifle rebarreled and chambered for.308. This at least gets my bullets the same for my collection. It shoots exceptional now.
